Sitges, about 30 miles down the coast from Barcelona, has
maintained its colourful traditions with few interruptions over more than 150 years,
and even in the present austerity they continue
as vigorously as ever.

LATIN AMERICA AND WORLD WAR ONE

At the beginning of World War One,
all Latin American countries were united in adopting a position of neutrality towards the main belligerents. By the war's end in 1918,
however, this unanimity had broken down. Why did this happen, and what were the consequences? Special attention will be given to the
case of Chile and its experience as a neutral state.

HISPANIC FILM NIGHT: Mujeres al borde de un ataque de
nervios (Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown)
1988, in Spanish with English sub-titles. Described variously as a “light comedy”,
a “black comedy” and a “door-slamming farce in the grand tradition”, this was director Pedro Almodóvar’s first huge international
success and was showered with awards. It has been chosen because of its fame at the time when HSLAS was being formed. The film will
be introduced by Dr. Brian Powell.

FIESTA DEL INVIERNO
This time it will be a birthday party for the Association
- to mark the fact that HSLAS is 20 years old in 2014. It will be held in St Mary's Church Hall in Cottingham. There will be celebratory
food (including Tapas and also hot dish), music and quizzes. There's a glass of cava on arrival and Moscatel de Valencia to finish
(but otherwise please bring your own drinks and glasses.

Golden Age Spain". Dr John Jones is an expert on Spain in the 16th and 17th centuries, and we look forward to an unusual aspect of
the subject.

enjoyed Peter's talk on Walking in Mallorca (with John England) last year. This time he will help us to understand more about the
ongoing tensions over the Falklands.

Vamos a jugar! (a juegos no prohibidos). Come and play bingo, I-spy and
other silly games, in Spanish, in the back room at the King William IV pub, Hallgate, Cottingham. An ideal opportunity to use some
simple Spanish in a relaxed setting with a pint or a glass of wine to hand. (The Spanish for bingo is …”bingo”.)

Simon Tomson: an illustrated talk on Medina Azahara. Medina Azahara, eight miles to the west of Córdoba, is the ruins of a vast,
fortified Muslim medieval palace-city built by Abd-ar-Rahman III al-Nasir (912–961), Caliph of Córdoba. Much archaeological work has
been done, and there is a museum. Not well known, but well worth visiting.
