THE FUTURE OF SPAIN; UNITED OR DIVIDED?
Dr Angel Smith from University of Leeds He will be looking at the future of Spain in the context of Catalan nationalism and other nationalisms within Spain, and will take into account the result of the elections to the Catalan parliament just over two weeks ago (which gave pro-independence parties a majority of seats but not of the overall vote). This is the final event in our series on the theme "Spain: past, present and future".

Vamos a jugar! Come and play bingo, I-spy and other silly games, in Spanish, in the back room at the King William Pub, Cottingham. An ideal opportunity to use some simple Spanish in a relaxed setting with a pint or a glass of wine to hand. (P.S.: The Spanish for bingo is …”bingo”.

A talk by the historian Peter Asquith-Cowan, looking at the Peninsular War (known in Spain as the War of Independence) but also at other aspects of Napoleon's enduring impact on Spain.

An illustrated talk by Dr Stephanie Dennison (Reader in Brazilian Studies, University of Leeds). Brazil
has produced many major award-winning films, including the wonderful and profoundly moving "The given word" ("O pagador de promessas")
which the Society showed in December. This is an opportunity to learn more about the context of that film, and about Brazilian
cinema in general.
